DIARY OF A NYMPH is a crudely made, but oh-so stimulating early Anthony Spinelli title. Like my counterpart in Belgium who writes so authoritatively on porn for IMDb listings, I believe Spinelli is the greatest (or close to that ranking) of all porn directors, and I'm currently watching many of his less famous efforts. I got to see his masterwork NOTHING TO HIDE at a Manhattan press screening back in July 1982, and became an instant fan.

Susan Westcott, a beautiful blonde porn star who almost exactly presages later superstar Sharon Kane in looks (and energy), gets perhaps her greatest showcase in this otherwise standard XXX movie. She plays the nymphomaniac Tracy of the title, confessing tearfully to her hubby in the final reel that she's cheated on him (he just caught her in the act with the neighbors), but she can't help it and is seeing a shrink regularly for her problem.

Prior to that sentimentally handled payoff, it seems more likely that the uncredited actor playing Jeff (Tracy's husband) is at fault. He neglects her and though we witness him having sex with her (softcore style in opening reel), he's strictly interested in getting off himself, not her needs. That's made clear in the movie's opening scene where Tracy masturbates in bed beside her sleeping mate, after his quickie sex with her.

A neighbor watches Tracy sunbathe, and comes over for coffee, immediately raping her twice in a relatively violent sequence. This was in the early years of XXX, before violent porn became strictly the subject of fetish films, notably those of Phil Prince and Joe Davian in NYC, with mainstream porn (to this day) eschewing violence for fear of censorship.

It turns out, however, that Tracy was anxious to have sex with that neighbor, luring him on for the month since she moved in to the 'hood. Neighborly sex turns out to be the secondary theme of NYMPH, as an ultra-buxom brunette MILF living nearby seduces Tracy, treats her to vibrator and strap-on dildo action, and later has her join in for a threesome with her husband. The MILF is listed in IMDb as Annette Michael.

Oddest scene is when the first neighbor tries to perform anal sex on Tracy, but simply can't, with visual evidence supporting the "too tight to permit entry" excuse. Why Spinelli included this footage is a bit cryptic -anal sex was rare in a feature film circa 1971, though obviously readily available in myriad stag loops.

One drawback to the film is frequent re-using of footage, in the usual "highlights" mode of flashbacks, which pads the running time. Also, Spinelli has the male protagonists decidedly flaccid and "short" in their master shots, giving the strong implications that sizable and hard enough to be pointing skyward "stunt cocks" were used for the XXX insert closeups. It is these closeups that are arousing.

I'm looking forward to discovering more Westcott films -she's a winner. She's the lead in the obscure incest movie BROTHER/SISTER directed by Mark Hunter, which is in circulation from two video companies currently but not listed at all in IMDb. That movie is particularly interesting in that both DVDs were transferred from incomplete prints in which all the XXX footage was crudely deleted; they stand as perfect examples of the exact borderline between X and XXX as to permissible content. I only wish a complete copy of BROTHER/SISTER will be found.
