Arthur Bartley and Janet Willard are fairly typical 1950s teenagers. Their lives are turned upside down however when Janet becomes pregnant. Desperate to tell his parents of the predicament they find themselves in, Arthur finds that he cannot do so. He arranges for Janet to have an abortion, but the internal turmoil this causes him finally forces him to tell his father, who races to save the girl from the back room abortionist.

According to Bobby Rupp, this was a movie that murder victim Nancy Clutter wanted to see. He mentions this in the book 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote.
------------------------
This originally began as a Broadway play written by "Midnight Cowboy" author James Leo Herlihy which opened at the Playhouse Theater on February 27, 1958, ran for 166 performances and closed on July 19, 1958.
------------------------
Twentieth Century-Fox announced that a sequel to 'Blue Denim' was planned, and would be called 'After Blue Denim' - the sequel was never made.
------------------------
Herb Alpert can be seen playing the trumpet in the band at the school dance.
------------------------
Lee Remick, Diane Varsi and Hope Lange were all considered for the lead role of Janet.
------------------------
Although it was initially scheduled to be released in the U.S. as "Blue Jeans," the title was changed to "Blue Denim." National Screen Service did print up posters with the original title, but they are rare. Some foreign markets used the "Blue Jeans" title in translation.
------------------------
The original play ended with Janet following through with an abortion, and she and Arthur realizing afterwards that they genuinely loved one another. Hollywood's Production Code, however, didn't allow for such a development, so the ending was rewritten.
------------------------
Carol Lynley and Warren Berlinger reprised their roles from the successful stage play.
