Major Benson Winifred Payne is being discharged from the Marines. Payne is a killin' machine, but the wars of the world are no longer fought on the battlefield. A career Marine, he has no idea what to do as a civilian, so his commander finds him a job - commanding officer of a local school's JROTC program, a bunch or ragtag losers with no hope. Using such teaching tools as live grenades and real bullets, Payne starts to instill the Corps with some hope. But when Payne is recalled to fight in Bosnia, will he leave the Corps that has just started to believe in him, or will he find out that killin' ain't much of a livin'?

To research his character, Damon Wayans endured several weeks of DI qualification training, learning the requirements of a Marine Corps Drill Instructor, as well as other aspects of Marine Corps training. Viewers can see several small things he does like the cadence of his walk, almost unconsciously correcting his cover after berating & getting in the face of each cadet, and the list goes on. A common sentiment among former DI's, not only in the Marines, but in all other branches, is their statement that one most be akin to an improvisational or stand-up comedian as a DI, since they constantly have to improvise on the spot, break down the cadets, come up with statements on the fly, and Wayans' prior experience as one was a huge asset.
------------------------

Despite the campy portrayal of Major Payne, his uniform shows the Scuba Diving Badge and Parachustist Badge. In the US Marine Corps, this almost certainly means that Payne came from an elite Marine Reconnaissance or Force Reconnaissance unit which would certainly justify his war grizzled character. Until the recent formation of the Marine Raider Regiment (itself formed by former Force Recon operators), Marine Force Recon was considered the very tip of the spear when it comes to the Marines' combat fighting elite.
------------------------

The theme song playing when Major Payne is dreaming about being married with the picket fence is The Donna Reed Show (1958). The husband on that show was Alex Stone. Alex Stone is also the name of the cadet who leads the unit.
------------------------

Major Payne quotes 10 separate rhymes which are: Love my barracks night and day, Won't complain That's where I'll stayGot no worry, got no stress! 'Cause we feel good in a dress.Major Payne's a major diss. He makes us squat when we piss.Got no worries, got no care. I'm just a bald headed son of a bitch without hair. -Used to be Samson, now I'm Ann. Gotta earn my right to be called a man. One! Don't you feel dumb. Two! Look at you.Hey Dunn you missed all the fun. Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum. What beanstalk you fall from? Don't push the "maybes", baby.
------------------------

In one scene, Major Payne tells the children, "Now apparently, what we have here, is a failure to communicate!" This is a famous quote taken from the movie Cool Hand Luke
------------------------

Damon Wayans' Payne character was dancing to "Pop that Coochie" by 2 Live Crew in the nightclub scene. Interestingly enough Wayans was having a real life feud with 2 Live Crew at the time due to a joke he told about the group during his comedy special, _Damon Wayans: The Last Stand (1990)_, when he called them "Gangstas with microphones". This prompted 2 Live Crew front man Luther Campbell to cut a response rant on Wayans and his show In Living Color (1990) on a track called "I Ain't Bullshittin' III", which coincidentally appears on the 'Sports Weekend' album. The same album that also features "Pop that Coochie".
------------------------

Loose remake of The Private War of Major Benson (1955).
------------------------

Filmed at the same location as the 1991 film "Toy Soldiers".
------------------------

Deak Williams was played by Damian Wayans, nephew of lead actor Damon Wayans.
------------------------

The trailer for this movie contains a clip from a deleted scene in which Major Payne, to rouse the cadets for reveille, holds a cigarette lighter under the barracks' sprinkler system. The sprinklers kick in, soaking everybody while Payne struts among the bunks in full rain-gear. "RISE AND SHINE, PUKES!"
------------------------

After the opening firefight and surrender of the drug cartel, Major Payne's HUMVEE can be seen driving past a sign that reads: Camp Pendleton Virginia. The only Camp Pendleton in Virginia is an army installation that is mainly used as a recreational facility with cabin rentals and the like. MCB Camp Pendleton (which is where Payne would be more likely to report) is actually in southern California.
------------------------

In the scene when Major Payne ( Wayans) first meets the cadets, he screams at one of them saying "I am not your damned brother" in fact, he's his uncle in real life. The cadet's real name is Damien Dante Wayans.
------------------------

Willinger did 57 push ups during the film, 25 for sneezing on Major Payne, 25 for "speaking out of line", and 7 during the ROTC games.
------------------------

Michael Ironside makes a cameo as Alex Stone's abusive stepfather Lt. Col. Stone.
------------------------

This film is a Wife and Kids production. Years later, Damon Wayons starred in the sitcom My Wife and Kids.
------------------------

Payne's apparent age, rank and Vietnam service do not match up for 1995.
------------------------

When Major Payne reports to Brigadier General Decker at the beginning of the film Payne salutes Decker without wearing his cover. U.S. Marines do not salute indoors unless, for instance, they're on some type of duty that requires them to be in full uniform including covers.
------------------------

When Cadets attempt to photograph Heathcoat with Major Payne, the first time Cadet Stone looks in, the clock shows 4:00, a few seconds later when the rest of the Cadets enter the room, the clock shows 12:30.
------------------------

In the Night Club/Restaurant, Major Payne eats all the food on his plate. The plate is alternately empty/full in subsequent shots.
------------------------

Early in the movie, when Major Payne kicks the window in his room, the next shot of him shows the window is not broken. It looks brand new.
------------------------

At the final JR ROTC games, 4 academies are announced as participating. Madison, Stapleton, Taggert and Wellington. But in the relay race 5 teams are competing at the start. St Michael's cadets are seen as well as their tent in a panoramic view, but they are never recognized or mentioned.
------------------------

After Maj. Payne sends Alex Stone's step father away and is talking to Alex you can see an earring in his right ear, after he turns away and then back to Alex the earring is gone.
------------------------

In the courtyard cut scene, after Payne throws the grenade on the obstacle course, you can see the cadets in their dresses before they are ever put in dresses by Payne.
------------------------

When the cadet in the lunch room passes out, he (and all the cadets) are wearing blue/grey uniforms. When they awaken the cadet in the next scene outside, they are all wearing camouflage.
------------------------

Near the beginning of the film, Payne instructs the cadets to do two hours of PT. They are doing so visibly from his window but within seconds, Tiger appears with his teacher at Payne's door.
------------------------

At the restaurant the amount of food on major Payne's plate changes, along with the amount of plates on the table
------------------------

Just before Major Payne removes his sunglasses (when a cadet throws his gun to another cadet) the camera crew is reflected in his mirrored sunglasses.
------------------------

When the guys are running away when trying to take a picture of Major Payne and Healthcoat in a dress, you can see the sandbag on the floor in the hallway.
------------------------

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is in California, not Virginia as shown on the sign in the beginning of the movie.
------------------------

In the closing credits, the producers thank, among others "Fort Union Military Academy." There exists no such institution. The venerable school's correct name is Fork Union Military Academy.
------------------------

In the scene at the obstacle course, Major Payne pulls the pin from a "live" grenade with his teeth... as anybody in the military can tell you this is impossible to do, not to mention the double safety on a grenade.
------------------------

Major Payne is a Marine Corps Officer and though shown twice wearing both the correct service and dress uniform. However when he goes on his date and is confronted by Cadet Stone he is wearing a white choker uniform that is worn by Navay Officers only. Since Major Payne is a Marine he would not be wearing a navy uniform.
------------------------

More than once, Major Payne is seen, standing at parade rest, his legs at shoulder's width apart, then he immediately salutes the troop leader, without going to attention. One must always be in the position of "attention" to salute anyone.
------------------------

Major Payne is an officer yet he wears a drill instructor hat which he claims hes trained multiple soldiers with. In the military only enlisted non-commissioned officers are drill instructors.
------------------------

Guide dogs have leashes on them outside of a home at all times, and would not be running loose.
------------------------

When Payne is recalled back to active duty, he is promoted to Lt. Colonel. Yet, when he is waiting for the train and shows up at the academy games, he is wearing a gold leaf insignia. As a Lt. Colonel, his insignia would have been silver.
------------------------

Major Payne is a Marine Corps officer. However, the cadets are Army JROTC cadets (as evidenced by their unit patches on their BDU uniforms and rank insignia). A Marine officer would be assigned to a Marine Corps JROTC unit, and not an Army one. Army JROTC units are staffed with Army personnel.
------------------------

When Payne sees the family across from the station a CSX locomotive enters the picture. Cut back to Payne and then back to the family and the end of the train is an Amtrak coach. A CSX freight locomotive would never be pulling a passenger train.
------------------------

All JROTC units have at least two instructors, typically a retired officer and a retired enlisted. There is only one instructor.
------------------------

They should have been in their PT outfit when doing PT.
------------------------

At the end of the movie, the recruit with a "Blind Seeing Eye Dog" German Shepherd is shown. This dog is just a guide dog, because "Seeing Eye" is a brand name, and would appear on the harness.
------------------------

The German Shepherd barked at Major Payne. Guide dogs are taught not to be bark or be aggressive, therefore this dog would not have made it through training.
------------------------

When Dodson trains the cadets in PT, he should have done the following: Called them to attention, gave the order of extended to the left move, arms downward move, left face, another extend to the left, arms downward move, left face, given the command of from front to rear, count off, stand at ease.
------------------------

The cadets should be in Class B attire: army green slacks, black shoes, shirt unbuttoned at the top or with neck tie, and army garrison cap or depending on the time of year, class A which includes all of above with the class A coat rather than wearing their BDU (battle dress uniform). However, it should be noted that many private institutions do not use issue JROTC uniforms, and instead opt to wear a uniform distinctive to their school.
------------------------

Even though Major Payne did not assume the position of "At Ease" when given the command "At Ease" by General Decker and remained at the position of attention, this could be a deliberate joke to say that Major Payne's position of ease and attention is the same.
------------------------

When Major Payne pulls the pin out of the grenade, you can clearly see that the top is painted blue. Live grenades are not painted blue, but practice grenades are.
------------------------

When Payne is dreaming about his fantasy life with Tiger andhis mom, the soldier who attacks them has a very visible rubber gun.
