The RSC puts a modern spin on Shakespeare's Hamlet in this filmed-for-television version of their stage production. The Prince of Denmark seeks vengeance after his father is murdered and his mother marries the murderer.

Both of Sir Patrick Stewart's stints as Claudius have been opposite Time Lords from Doctor Who (1963). His first production being opposite Sir Derek Jacobi, who played The Master on Doctor Who (1963), and this production opposite David Tennant, the tenth man to play The Doctor.

For the famed "skull monologue", where Hamlet finds and speaks to the skull of Yorick, David Tennant is using a real, human skull of a man who donated it in his will for this purpose.

In many stage productions of Hamlet, there is a tradition where Ophelia's madness is conveyed in part by having her hair down, unkempt, and the character going barefoot. In this version, Hamlet is also barefoot with unkempt hair to denote madness.

Edward Bennett understudied the role of Hamlet throughout the Stratford-upon-Avon and London stage productions. On December 8, 2008 he played Hamlet at a few hours notice when David Tennant had to pull out due to a back injury. He continued in the role, to great acclaim, until Tennant's return on January 3, 2009.
