Plot Synopsis:

This is a ground breaking documentary investigating allegations of election fraud during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. A group of concern citizens heading up watchdog organizations investigate the 2004 election in the wake of these allegations on the 2000 presidential election which ended up decided in the Supreme Court. These ordinary citizens investigate voter machine hardware and software security holes in systems used in numerous states including Ohio, Florida and California. They demonstrate with the help of a computer programmer how easy it is to change the numbers tallied on Diebold voting machines that count ballots. They are forced to the extreme of picking the trash at a Florida county warehouse to discover ballot tapes with numbers that mismatched the official election authority records, giving George Bush a lead in the numbers.

I just saw this documentary on HBO last night.The timing of this program could not have been more perfect. Right after Halloween, I was scared plenty.

I had long been aware of many of the facts depicted. However, until I saw a hacker change the votes on a Diebold Memory Card before the votes were cast, and change the results of the test vote, I was neutral on this issue.

We Americans who have been worried about this very issue have been culled into silence by those who would call our concerns "Conspiracy Theories" This film should dispel any such notion and wake up most citizens to demand more security in our voting process.

The film depicts at least 3 major issues, from Al Gore actually receiving negative votes in Volusia County, FL, to the final coup de grace, the hacking of the actual memory card.

Diebold Officials deny any such vulnerability, but they have no answer for the filmed facts. In fact, a well known politician from Colorado actually owns an interest in one of the voting machines known to contain serious vulnerability. This machine was used during his landslide election victory. It appears that optical scan ballots are the most easily hacked.

Wake up, America, it's possible that our "free elections" are not really free at all, and we have absolutely no way to find out for sure. Write your Congressman and demand a serious investigation.

We must not be complacent about our most fundamental democratic right! At the very least we must demand verifiable paper ballots to make sure our votes are not hacked.

This timely HBO production should be required viewing for all voters. It shows irrefutable proof of vote tampering in past elections, as well as serious flaws in the machines being used to count votes in upcoming elections - including Nov. 7th, 2006.

Since the subject matter is so huge, trying to cover it all in the time allotted would be impossible. However, the producers decided to concentrate on the activities of just one group of many exposing election fraud - Bev Harris from BlackBoxVoting

The U.S. needs more people like Bev. Many more. Now. Without the vote, you have nothing but a dictatorship.

This movie is one of the most important movies of our times, and for generations to come. This movie exposes, and explains, what actually happened during the past two presidential elections. This movie should be required viewing for every civics class in every democratic country, especially the United States.

One of the most disarming parts of the movie is the woman who leads the charge in exposing what can only be described as criminal fraud in an election. She does not look at all like a typical protester, actor, filmmaker, muckraker or investigator. But after you see what she does to further the cause of truth and democracy, you will agree that she is a heroine in the truest sense of the word. She is my hero.

Please watch this and think about how your "vote" might go... This documentary is an eye opener to the corruption of what is supposed to be a "pure" given right of our vote and voice to be heard. But when your voice (vote) can be manipulated, then democracy is not there. This movie shows how there are three companies who provide these machines and all the so called security and accuracy they have. But the truth is shown that these machines can easily be tampered with. I just heard that there are devices you can get so that when you go up to the computer and vote you can manipulate the system as you vote. We have chosen this high tech system which leaves no paper trail to the truth.

The story of mass voter fraud done by computer nerds. If this is true, it's probably one of the scariest things ever. Not scary like the wolfman scary, but scary because it's real.

This shows that it was actually legitimately possible that the entire presidential election was rigged. With simple hacking or computer programing by a company run by a republican and supported by republicans turning the output toward a republican candidate.

It completely explains the negative vote totals that Kerry received in some districts in the last election. Instead of stuffing the ballot box, technology allows to start one person possibly negative 10,000 votes with the other guy up 10,000 ... unfortunately Kerry didn't get the number of votes required to bring the negative vote back to zero.

This is pretty big. If it is true.

Hacking Democracy, to me, comes way out of left field, so when my friend recommended I was skeptical but willing to watch. The movie introduces you to voting fraud via a mother and some very dedicated watchdogs. The movie takes you through the personal fight of these people and never ceases to provide the big-picture as well.

Come to the movie with an open-mind and take the ride. The movie does a good job of not coming off as extreme or radical and constantly roots itself in the moment. The people who are fighting for a more open system are very easy to identify with, and overall the movie succeeds in its goals.

Hacking Democracy takes an extreme position, but does it with Apple Pie. 10/10

Commander Coconut stated in yesterday's Orlando Sentinel: "Have you seen the documentary Hacking Democracy? Truly frightening, scarier than a Wes Craven movie." Well, as a horror film lover, I was certainly interested, and I have to admit that I was scared shitless. Craven can definitely take tips from Simon Ardizzone and Russell Michaels on how to make a horror movie.

No, there was no blood or special effects, just a simple test of the voting system here in this country and the results that show we cannot be sure that our votes are truly counted.

If that doesn't scare the pants off you, then realize that this system is controlled by Republicans, and you can see that our country is truly headed down the toilet.

If you care about American democracy, or what is left of it, then you really need to see this documentary.

I am a senior in high school and we watched Hacking Democracy in my government class. It's funny that we have a government class because even though the class is required by state law, the state gives no curriculum or work in our Government class. While i watched this movie i was blown away. What kind of people could over look such a huge glitch in, not only the voting machines, but in the U.S. Government system itself. I am very glad i watched this and everyone should see it. We are writing a reaction paper as an assignment that my teacher made up. Well, it's the most she could think of since she doesn't have any material to teach us. If you want your vote to count...i recommend the viewing of Hacking Democracy.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but you would need a sizable miniseries to adequately tell the tale of voter disenfranchisement that has become the shameful cornerstone of American 'democracy'. Hacking Democracy is a great starting point, but it can only do so much. For better or worse, it focuses on election gadfly Bev Harris and her compatriots at Black Box Voting. Harris' work is important, but it's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the thoroughly compromised machinery of America's electoral systems, which are now dominated by for-profit corporations who keep their 'proprietary' software close to their vests. Absolutely essential viewing, but I'm looking forward to someone making a documentary about the crown prince of sleazy electioneering, Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.
